I never imagined things could get worse, but they do. The men who took us show no mercy. They won’t stop until they’ve destroyed Rafe for something he has no memory of, and I’m their weapon of choice.

Tortured and defiled, they make me wish I was back in that cabin where death was favorable to drawing another breath, but our captors can’t break what’s already broken.

What scares me is the madness I see festering inside Rafe. I’ve taken his freedom, his career, his reputation, yet despite all I’ve done, he’s determined to fight for me, kill for me, give everything he is for me.

He’ll even die for me.

Elizabeth Chalker is still in the furnace of life’s' calamities and fighting the good fight of faith and endurance, keeping her eyes on the prize of heaven. Before serious, physical illness devastated her body, Elizabeth was on the fast track as a successful psychologist and addictions specialist, working with violent juvenile offenders and their families, near completion of her third graduate degree. Her life is a testimony of faith that is steadfast and remains no matter the seemingly dark, unjust, and treacherous circumstances of life. She resides in Lighthouse Point, Florida. Elizabeth continues to minister to those in need and aspires to show God's glory through every breath she takes.
This is a real life story of being in the fire, where I currently remain, where my heart for the Lord has become increasingly insatiable. A deepened intimacy has developed and continues to grow even through this very moment, and will continue beyond. As you read, this is my hope and prayer for you as well.

book cover

I have one book currently, “Hanging On by the Scratch Marks My Nails Left Behind: Raw Faith”. This is a book that was written while still in the midst of trials with no promise for the suffering to end. It took 10 years to write while suffering serious, physical illness. My prayer for the book is to inspire individuals to self-examine and find their core; to realize that we are all children of God and therefore, one in Him. We tend to see life and our circumstances as if from under a quilt as it is being made, where all that is seen is a bunch of haphazard threads from our view. God’s view is from above where everything comes together and forms a beautiful and complete picture.
My hope is also to encourage individuals to seek love and extend love.
One of the most important messages of the book is to strengthen anyone who reads it, to cause him or her to embrace all of who he or she is, the parts we deem ‘dark’ and unacceptable as well as the parts we see as praiseworthy and pleasant.
Most importantly, my hope is that the reader will embrace intimacy in relationship with God and realize that raw expression of heart, no matter how unacceptable to the world, is honorable in the eyes of God and welcomed.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Blair Reynolds was born to rule. Worlds, that is. Destined to reign over an

ancient intergalactic race, it may seem her fate is written in the stars. But she’s willing to risk it all for

another chance to spend forever with her true love – even if it means traveling through time and space

to the other side of the universe.

As far as Ash is concerned, Blair's happily-ever-after involves him, not the

mere mortal with whom she seems so infatuated. She was bequeathed to him by her father, and Ash

will go to any lengths to keep Blair and her true love apart.

And Ash isn’t the only one.

Deep in the jungles of Brazil, where tribal drums call to Blair and her true

love, other forces carry out dangerous secret plans.

However, Blair has secrets of her own … secrets so lethal she dares not

even remember them.

Secrets so painful they could ruin everything.

Because some secrets kill.

EXCERPT

I was no longer a bystander to this story. I was the story. Every secret

interwoven through the tale I’m about to tell you belongs to me. And the summer I graduated from high

school was the summer everything came together in a horrible clash of good versus evil.

Packing up and leaving my small, inconsequential, southeast Texas

hometown meant leaving part of myself behind. I said goodbye to the human side of me when we piled

into David’s truck and drove away from our home. And I waved farewell to any hope of ever returning as

I watched our home slip into the shades of night.

Everything had been turned upside down, and deciding what was good

and what was evil was like looking through sunglasses at night. It all washed together in a murky blend

of darkness, shadows, and secrets.

My biggest secret of all was one for which I had no answer: which one was

I – good or evil? I stuffed that secret deep behind my ribs and swallowed it down.

Some secrets are best kept in the darkness away from prying eyes and

those who would seek to face them head-on. Some secrets kill.

MY REVIEW:

MONARCH IS BOOK 3 IN THE SERIES.  EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT READ THE OTHER 2 BOOKS IN THE SERIES,  THIS BOOK WAS EASY TO FOLLOW.  I FOUND MYSELF DRAWN IN THE STORY FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END. BELLE DOES AN EXCELLENT JOB OF EXPLAINING EVERYTHING ALONG THE WAY SO I NEVER FELT LOSS AT ALL IN THE STORY.  MONARCH HAS EVERYTHING ROMANCE, SCI-FI PARANORMAL, ACTION AND EVEN ALIENS.  I LOVE THE COMBINATION OF GENRES AND REALLY ENJOYED THE STORY.  I WAS NOT BORED FOR ONE SECOND.  THIS WAS A VERY FAST READ FOR ME.  I LOVE THE AUTHOR'S WRITING.  SHE IS AN EXCELLENT STORYTELLER AND KNOWS HOW TO DRAW THE READERS IN. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO READING MORE BOOKS BY BELLE WHITTINGTON AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU READ THIS SERIES. I AM DEFINITELY INTERESTED IN READING THE OTHER 2 BOOKS IN THE SERIES.  5 STARS

Portrait of young

elegant couples in the tender passion

EXCERPT

“Cord, come dance with me,” I suggest, sliding out of my chair and holding my hand out to her.

She looks up at me in surprise then blushes and reaches her good hand up to clasp mine and we head to the dance floor.

The music has all been slower songs, which is good because with her broken arm Cord wouldn’t be able to get too

crazy.

I slide one arm around her waist and pull her against me while taking her free hand in mine. We sway to the music and I

notice the beat changes into another song which is a bit faster, so I dip Cord back then nudge her gently with my arm at

her waist while pulling her other arm, making her go in a circle before pulling her body back up against mine.

She giggles. “This is fun, and you’re quite good,” she says smiling up at me. “Even with my bum arm.”

I smile back and respond, “thank you.” Then we continue on, me dipping, swaying, pushing away pulling her back against

me. I twist her so that her back is against me and we sway in time to the music. I drop my head against her shoulder and

lay my cheek against hers.

“You’re pretty good at this yourself,” I say into her ear and feel her body tremble against mine as she lays her head back

against my chest. ““Even with your bum arm.”

We sway a bit more, before I spin her around again and dip her before bringing her up against my body, lifting her to

where her face is close to mine. We are still swaying slightly as the music changes again, and then, looking into her eyes

and her flushed face, I lean closer, my eyes falling to her lips.

I feel her take in a breath and hear it catch in her throat. I release her hand and slide both of my arms around her, one

on her waist and the other around her back. Her hand moves to my shoulder and I feel her pull me closer. My eyes flick

back up to hers, which are locked onto my mouth. Without another thought, I lean in and press my lips against hers

softly. My hand moves to her nape as I cradle her against me.

I feel a shock at the first touch of our lips and then I feel Cord press herself even closer to me as she pulls at my

shoulder. She is everything I have been wanting and more than I had hoped for. Her lips are soft and warm, molding

against mine; her body is lean and muscled, though still soft. Her hand moves up to my hair and she lightly scratches my

scalp and I moan into her mouth feeling the touch all throughout my body.

I move my lips against hers, lightly swiping my tongue against her lower lip, coaxing her to open for me. She does,

sucking in a shuddering breath, and I thrust my tongue into her mouth. I feel as well as hear her groan in to my mouth as

she angles her mouth against mine.

I pull back from her mouth and move to her neck, lightly leaving open- mouthed kisses along her jaw and neck. I have

waited years to finally kiss her, and I have wanted her more the last few days. “Cord,” I whisper and I feel her body

stiffen.

I pull back and look at her in question. She looks up at me with indecision all over her face, though I can see the desire in

her eyes.

Interview of Chris Karlsen

GIRL WITH PEN LIKES TO WELCOME CHRIS KARLSEN, THE AUTHOR OF SILK TO THE BLOG.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. What inspired you to be a writer?

Movies mostly. I'd see one I loved but thought how I'd have changed the ending. That led to creating stories in my head and finally got the chance to put down on paper after I retired.

2. Are you married? Kids?

I'm married for almost 26 years and have three grown step-children who live out of state.

3. What genre or genres do you like to write and read?

I write historical romances, romantic thrillers and my latest is a new series that is historical mystery/suspense.

I read historical fiction, historical romances, some paranormal romances, and standard thrillers.

4. Do you have a favorite author or authors?

I love Bernard Cornwell, Mike Connelly, John Sandford, Joe Wambaugh, Julie Anne Lone, Julia Quinn, and Deanna Raybourn.

5. Do you have a favorite book or books?

The Lions of Al-Rassan is my favorite book. It is a fantasy set in a medieval period in a fictional country that is clearly medieval Spain. I also love Cornwell's The Saxon Tales series, the Pennyroyal-Greene series by Julie Long, the Hollywood Station series by Wambaugh and the Bridgerton one by Quinn.

6. Do you consider yourself a romantic?

Not terribly so, at least not in my everyday life. I do better giving my characters that quality.

7. What would you consider a romantic evening?

Dinner anywhere in Paris or dinner is a fine restaurant on Michigan Avenue in Chicago with a view of the Loop. Dinner and a great Broadway play (a great musical like Phantom or Les Miz or Mama Mia)

8. Do you daydream a lot?

I kind of daydream by thinking about scenes for whatever book I am writing while I am doing housework or other mundane things.

9. If you had to choose a place for a romantic setting, where would it be?

Like most folks, Paris is my number one choice, then I'd pick one of the Greek Islands or Bodrum, Turkey, which is on the Aegean and like the Greek Isles has lovely cafes.

10. What is your favorite color or colors?

I favor jewel tones like bright copper or sapphire blue or deep garnet red.

11. What is your favorite holiday?

I don't really have one but if I had to choose, I'd pick Thanksgiving because I like to eat (I like it too much!) and I enjoy all the rich scents from the different dishes as they cook.

12. Where would you go on a first date?

Dinner and a movie. I'd love to say dinner and dancing but I am a horrible dancer.

13. How would you impress your date?

I'd dress as beautifully as possible and do the best I could with hair and makeup. And, I don't know if this would impress him or not, but I wouldn't go to bed with him, not on first date. If he likes me, he'll call me again. If not, then he wasn't a loss.

14. Where is your favorite vacation spot?

Anywhere in France and I love England equally well.

15. I understand you have a new release called Silk. What inspired you to write Silk?

I wanted to do a setting in Victorian London and I had the idea for this detective hero. I'd visited the South Wales Borderers regimental museum a few years back and knew someday I'd write a book with a hero from one of their battles. I started mentally building his world several years ago when I was working on another series. After I finished my last historical romance, Knight Blindness, I decided not to put off writing the Victorian story. I had a good time writing Rudyard Bloodstone, the detective and giving him a worthy villain.

16. Do you have any books you are currently working on?

Yes, I'm working on book 4 in my Knights in Time series. No title yet. It's a historical romance.

17. What book or series that you wrote would you recommend to readers? And why?

I'd love to have readers enjoy Silk, of course. I'm excited for this new series. I'd also recommend Knights In Time series. They have been very popular over the last couple years and I think they'll find the characters fun and interesting.

THANKS AGAIN CHRIS FOR TAKING THE TIME OUT OF YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE TO APPEAR ON MY BLOG.  I CAN'T WAIT TO READ YOUR NEW BOOK SILK.  THE KNIGHTS IN TIME SERIES IS A WONDERFUL READ. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU CHECK OUT SILK AND THE KNIGHTS IN TIME SERIES.

Author Bio:

I was born and raised in Chicago. My father was a history professor and my mother was, and is, a voracious reader. I grew up with a love of history and books.

My parents also love traveling, a passion they passed onto me. I wanted to see the places I read about, see the land and monuments from the time periods that fascinated me. I’ve had the good fortune to travel extensively throughout Europe, the Near East, and North Africa.

I am a retired police detective. I spent twenty-five years in law enforcement with two different agencies. My desire to write came in my early teens. After I retired, I decided to pursue that dream. I write two different series. My paranormal romance series is called, Knights in Time. My romantic thriller series is, Dangerous Waters.

I currently live in the Pacific Northwest with my husband, four rescue dogs and a rescue horse.

Excerpt of Silk

He wrapped an end in each hand and pulled. His fingers crept up the silk and he tugged a bit harder still. The material pressed deeper into the flesh of her neck. Bright pink dotted her cheeks and radiated down to her jaw. The veins in her temples popped out and pulsed in time to her heartbeat. She moaned, pushed her hips upward and writhed against him. Her soft pubic hair tickled his testicles. Isabeau’s unsubtle way of letting him know she wanted him inside her. He obliged.

Her hands encircled his wrists. She tugged hard outward, harder than usual. A choked sigh escaped her. He paid no attention. This was standard. Isabeau always insisted he maintain pressure until she signaled for him to release his hold. In the past, when she reached the edge of consciousness, she’d beat along his upper arms. This time she thrashed her head back and forth, something he hadn’t seen before. Her eyes bulged in an unattractive way and she clawed at him. Her nails gouged the skin on his hands, drawing blood.

She hurt him and he wanted to slap her. He almost let go of one end of the scarf to do that. Instead, he pulled tighter. Isabeau tried to insert her fingers into the spot where the material crossed over. Her mouth opened and shut, soundless and fishlike. She swatted at the mattress wildly. Red-faced to the point of being near purple, she bucked beneath him.

She fired his blood with her lack of inhibition. Never had she responded with such intensity. Raw power surged through him, primitive, animalistic. He pumped hard. Ready to climax, William clenched his fists, twisting the scarf one last turn. Odd, feathery touches tapped his biceps, feminine and subtle grazes, and then she went limp. Spent, he released his hold and collapsed on top of her, his heart pounding while he caught his breath.

Isabeau didn’t move and her head stayed turned to the side. She hadn’t cried out the way she normally did when sated. Perhaps she was disappointed with his effort. He gave the thought a mental shrug. At the end of the day, it really didn’t matter. He’d arrange for her departure first thing in the morning.

William rolled over and slung a sweaty arm over his eyes. He tried to decide which was worse, telling her tonight the affair was over or waiting until morning. The idea of doing it after such a rambunctious sexual endeavor seemed bad form, but he wanted to get it over with. He turned onto his side, prepared for histrionics, caterwauling, great tears and verbal abuse.

"Isabeau, look at me. I’ve come to a decision and it will likely distress you." Nothing. She didn’t stir. "Isabeau?"

He shook her by the arm. Still no response. William let go and her arm dropped listless to the mattress. He raised her arm again and let go. Again, it fell listless. He straddled her and patted her cheeks. Nothing. Her head twisted without resistance first right then left depending on the direction of his pat. He slapped her harder. Nothing. Vacant eyes stared fixed on the ceiling. He bent an ear to her chest. Nothing. William leapt from the bed, snatched a silver mirror from the dressing table, and held it under her nose. Nothing.

"Bitch." William hurled the mirror against the wall. "Bitch, whore," he raged and paced along the side of the bed. "I will not allow you to make my life a nightmare. This was your doing. I told you to leave me alone."
