EXCERPT:

While the morning star climbs steadily to its zenith, Princess Keira finds herself standing before the ancient, beautiful fountain at the focal point of her family’s private garden. As if seeking guidance, her troubled gaze restlessly traces the beautiful faces of the three stone maidens endlessly pouring water from richly carved urns into the basin at their feet. They stare sightlessly back at her, their tranquil expressions only increasing the agitation that had drawn her to the haven of the garden. 

Angry at their lack of assistance, she bares her teeth at them in a feral grimace. With an impatient swoosh of her dress she turns her back on them and makes her way toward the rear of the garden in search of anything to distract her from her disturbing thoughts. 

For six months the garden has offered the greatest solace from her worries. Since the sudden and unexplainable death of her beloved brother Drake, darkness and shadows have crept into her dreams, leaving her tired, worn and terrified to sleep. All around her seems foreign and strange, making her uncertain of every decision. Regrettably, the spectres from her nightmares have been gaining strength of late. So much so that they have begun to haunt her during her waking hours as well, to the point that even the garden’s serenity has begun to lose its power over dispelling the coldness within.

 She reaches her destination and, like a lost child, looks out through the gemsend dome that protects the garden. Beyond the cliff face that the garden rests upon, her gaze is drawn to the magnificent and turbulent Treyzar Ocean. To the north she notes a fierce gale brewing and, despite the brightness around her, a delicate shudder claims her. The growing storm’s fury and violence call to the darkness that shrouds her like a choking veil.

 As the heavens continue to darken and the storm’s bluish-black clouds relentlessly move closer, her breathing becomes harsh and rapid in the surrounding quiet. Riveted, she tracks the squall’s progress while fleeting images of destruction, death and unspeakable pain flit through her mind’s eye. With each passing impression the chill within her soul grows, drawing her deeper into her black melancholy.
