I look up to the owner of the gruff voice and see it’s the man who was sitting on the other side of the bar. In the light, I can see his features properly, and I like what I see. He’s got at least a decade on the boy who spilled my drink. Dark hair I want to run my hands through skims the top of his ears, and unlike the other men in the bar, he’s got thick stubble coating his chin.

Drawing my attention away from the newcomer, Drunk Asshole stands up straight and faces him, eyeing him for a beat before retreating. But Mystery Man grabs his arm before he can leave.

“Apologize to the lady.”

The drunk guy huffs and is about to say something but clearly thinks better of it. All the fight goes out of him. Instead, in my direction, he mumbles, “Sorry.”

“You’re a soldier,” the man admonishes him. “Act like one.”

Once he releases his hold, the man staggers back to his friends, and I look up to my savior and find dark eyes staring down at me.

“Sorry you had to go through that. It gets wild in here.”

“You don’t need to apologize for him.”

He signals over the bartender, who wipes up the spilled beer with a cloth. “That asshole should’ve bought you a drink to replace the one he spilled.” He catches the eye of the bartender and asks me, “You want another beer to replace the one you spilled? Or do you want to leave? I can walk you to your car if you feel unsafe.”

I run my gaze over him. He’s tall and solid, with broad shoulders. His blue t-shirt sits snug over muscular arms, and tattoos snake over his tanned skin. He doesn’t look like a typical military guy.

The shaggy haircut and facial hair are only allowed in some of the elite troop units. If he’s military, then he’s special forces like my brother, Hudson, which is why I know not to ask.

“Why would I be any safer with you?”

He nods once. “Good point. You can go out to your own car, and our man here”—he indicates the bartender—“can watch you on the security cameras to make sure you get to your car safely.”

He’s giving me a way out, and I know I should take it. I can almost hear my mom scolding me to leave. But I feel safe with him, and if I’m going to accomplish my goal, he’s the one I want to do it with.

I nod to the bartender. “I’ll take another beer, please.” The man pulls out his wallet, but I shake my head. “And I’ll pay for it.”

His gaze meets mine, and he nods again, slipping his wallet away. He understands why I don’t want a man to buy me a drink. I don’t want to feel an obligation, even though that’s what I came for.

“And one for my friend,” I add.

Mystery Man raises his eyebrows at me.

“For saving me.” I give him my first genuine smile of the night.

Wesley Gray

Aurora’s, London

Friday 17th June

Wesley Gray was a very rich man. And that made him very happy.

He’d spent the first 20 years of his life grafting hard, right up until he found himself in the world of financial banking. Specifically, as a hedge fund manager. From there, it was a cutthroat rise to the top. And he wasn’t ashamed to say he’d screwed a fair few people along the way.

But that was the beauty of being so filthy rich. He didn’t need to worry about shit like that anymore.

He could do what he wanted, when he wanted. And on Fridays, he wanted to be sitting at his regular table at Aurora’s, Soho’s chicest restaurant. Known for its flamboyant history as a former brothel, Aurora’s was an exclusive club for the mega-rich.

Which is exactly where he was.

It wasn’t a big place, but it was still decadent in every way imaginable, with tables spaced far enough apart that multi-million-pound business deals could be discussed without the risk of being overheard. It was famed for its extensive drinks list with wines from all around the world, some of which were almost a hundred years old. And the best part? The Michelin-star, world-renowned chef in the kitchen delivering a fresh menu every week.

The room was accented with deep red walls, plush leather chairs, and artwork from the latest talent London had to offer. It was full, as it always was. It took months to get a table at Aurora’s.

But Wesley Gray had a permanent reservation.

Second table along, at the front. Far enough away from the door that he wouldn’t be disturbed, but close enough that he didn’t feel like he was at the back of the room.

The waiters all knew him.

He tipped generously, so they knew to anticipate his every whim.

Now in his fifties, Wesley Gray had long since retired. If retired was even the right word. Sure, he owned London’s largest investment firm that spanned multiple continents and had huge offices in all the major worldwide cities; New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, and San Francisco to name a few. They were just his favourites, and he visited them all regularly, mostly for pleasure, not business.

Turns out when you’re not chained to a desk from 6am to 9pm, there’s a lot of pleasure out there in the world. A lot of women who would happily throw themselves at him. And he didn’t even need to treat them well.

Opposite him sat his latest conquest. She was tall, long-legged, and had black chin-length hair. He’d surprised himself really, because normally he was into big-boobed blondes, but this one had practically fallen into his lap at the fundraiser gala on Tuesday, and she was deliciously submissive in the bedroom.

The waiter approached the table to take their order.

“Good evening, Mr Gray,” he said.

“My usual wine,” said Wesley Gray. “And we’ll both have the chef’s special.”

The menu didn’t offer a chef’s special. But it had become a tradition of sorts. It normally resulted in a hand-picked dish from the menu with an added flourish.

The waiter nodded, jotted the order down onto his little pad and then disappeared from the table, taking the menus with him. Another thing he liked about this place – it was old school.

No mobile phones allowed inside. Which meant no cameras. Making it the perfect place to meet with people you didn’t want to be seen with by the paparazzi. It didn’t stop them camping outside almost 24/7, but it did offer a modicum of privacy that was impossible to get anywhere else.

Less than five minutes later, another waiter appeared at the table carrying the already uncorked wine. He showed Wesley Gray the bottle and poured it into the wine glasses on the table. Normally, Wesley Gray would be offered the courtesy of tasting the wine before being poured an entire glass.

He glanced up at the waiter and realised that it wasn’t a face he recognised. In fact, it was a perfectly neutral face, the kind you forgot almost instantly after seeing it. The waiter didn’t smile or acknowledge him in any way. He simply finished pouring and paused as Wesley Gray brought the wine to his lips and took a sip. Then the waiter gave a small nod of his head and left.

Frowning, Wesley Gray took another sip of the wine, wondering at the strange behaviour. It tasted perfectly fine. Not that he was a wine connoisseur by any means, he just liked the feeling of power that came from buying expensive things.

Glancing across the table, his date looked bored. Her eyes were flitting around the room, clocking the different faces sitting at the tables, and he immediately regretted bringing her. But there was nothing he could do about it now.

He opened his mouth to speak, but a wave of dizziness overcame him and he gripped the arm of his chair. His breath came in frantic pants and the glass of wine slipped from his fingers, spilling on the plush cream carpet as he gasped for air.

Desperately, he pushed his chair away from the table in an attempt to stand up, but he couldn’t breathe. By now, restaurant-goers were turning to stare at the commotion, and several waiters rushed forward to assist as he fell to the floor.

“Someone call an ambulance!” shouted his date, horror written all over her face.

But it was too late.

Wesley Gray was dead.

Chapter One

Storm

I was dying.

The ache in my bones made me restless, but I lacked the strength to move. Pain, deep and throbbing, paralyzed my limbs. The tear in my wing stung, sharp and unrelenting, but it didn’t rival the burning in my eye.

I shivered against the growing chill in my limbs. Dragon’s bane was relentless. Only time remained before the poison quenched my internal fire. And then my heart would stop beating.

In the meantime, I endured the delusions that dragon’s bane forced on my mind, memories, nightmares. Recollections of long-dead and newly dead friends. Scenarios, both fictional and real, played out in my mind’s eye, twisting and turning so that every situation turned toxic. Hate, anger, and bitter regret churned through my being. I groaned deep in my chest and longed for the coming end. Anything to stop this torture.

As I drifted in and out of consciousness, fighting to maintain vigilance until the end, the sound of a plaintive whine cut through my tortured thoughts. I cracked my good eye open.

“Beggar.” My voice vibrated painfully in my throat.

The dark-brown dog with floppy ears sitting in my line of sight brightened up. He hopped onto all four of his paws and shook himself. A cloud of dirt and grit exploded from his coat.

I closed my eyes again, too tired to care.

The dog nudged my talons. I slit my eye open again. His thick brown tail whipped back and forth as he watched me. He was a solid creature, though surprisingly agile. He whimpered and did a strange backward shuffle as though encouraging me to follow him.

“No.” My lungs ached, irritated by the poison that I had accidentally breathed in the day before when I incinerated the foolish fae that attacked me. Or had it been mere hours ago? I found I didn’t care. My head throbbed.

With a bark, Beggar bounced on his two front paws and then glanced over his shoulder before he whined and turned in a tight circle.

My eyelid dragged downward as my ability to fight the poison ebbed. The acidic scent of dragon’s bane filled my senses in a rush, yet another sign the poison was permeating deeper into my body. “Go,” I told the dog.

At least he could escape.

“He can’t. They are guarding the door.” The sound of soft footfalls announced the invader far too late. My hearing must’ve been affected as well. I had missed her arrival. The voice sounded feminine.

I drew in a sharp breath and lifted my head. No metallic scent meant she carried no metal weapon and wore no armor. Still, that didn’t mean she was unarmed. I blinked through the film blurring my one good eye. Despite my best efforts, it refused to focus.

She was a slender, pale-faced blur carrying a lantern of some kind in the darkness of my makeshift refuge. “Have you come to kill me?”

“No.” She bent down and scratched the dog behind the ears. He leaned eagerly against her legs and then pranced around, desperate for more affection, foolish creature.

The female ignored the begging dog and approached. “I wish to heal you.”

I huffed in disbelief, producing a pathetic cloud of smoke. My fire was cooling faster than I expected.

“What happened to your eye?” she asked, tilting her head to the side.

“Another dragon’s claw.”

“And your wing?”

I tucked both of my wings closer to my torso. My pain intensified, but I ignored it. “Are you taking inventory for the butchers out there? Making sure I have all the essential parts so they can sell them off when I am dead?”

She grimaced before resuming her perusal. “If it is a rip, I don’t think I can heal it, but—” She peered up at my head as she walked around to my right side, out of my good eye’s range. “I think I can do something for your injured eyes, though.”

“They are more valuable as a matched set?”

She glared at me. I felt it more than saw it—a disconcerting sensation. My eyelids dragged down again. I gave in to the poison’s pull and dropped my head, resting my chin on the ground.

She moved around my snout with agitation in her tread. Had I been stronger, I would’ve reared back away from her. As it was, I didn’t even try. Instead, I forced my eye open. She pressed her palm to my snout.

“What are you doing?” I rasped out.

Healing you.

The Quantum Revelations by Stuart Heinrich

BLURB: The world is on the brink of an apocalyptic climate crisis and quickly spiraling out of control into a dystopian nightmare. As everything collapses around them, two scientists struggle for relevance in their quest to build the world’s first practical quantum computer. They discover so much more. A mystery of physics that goes deeper than they could have ever imagined.

Excerpt:

The importance of this seemingly mundane research could not be overstated. If things were really as bad as he feared, world leaders needed to know the truth, and fast. The very future existence of mankind might depend on it.

No, it was worse than that. He laughed to himself at the sad truth, that even this seemingly over-exaggerated description failed to capture the full gravity of the importance of their mission. It was not just the future of mankind that depended on it, but the future of all life on Earth. The very habitability of the planet was at stake. Every tree, every blade of grass, every insect. The future of every living thing, from the largest blue whale down to the smallest microbe hung in the balance.

Humanity had achieved much to be proud of. But like Icarus, mankind had been too greedy, and had flown too close to the sun: pushing forward mercilessly in pursuit of uninterrupted exponential growth and consumption. Mankind had become a scourge upon the Earth.

If humanity destroyed itself, he would have no sympathy. It was the rest of the natural world that he felt sorry for. The caribou of Alaska, the tropical birds of the rainforest, the elephants of Africa, the dolphins of the sea, the giant redwoods of California, and every other unsuspecting life form on this planet. They were the true innocent victims. They had done nothing to deserve what was coming.
