FROM OCEAN DEPTHS TO PEN AND PAPER

Thirty years ago, I wrote in my journal, pondering where I would see myself in my fifties:

“I see myself gazing at the sea horizon, taking in the serenity and tranquility of the ocean. The sound of the waves is so calming, yet mysterious. The rhythmic flow of words dances along with the tides as I pour my heart and soul out to the Universe.”

“Is there more meaning to life?”

“How can I live a life of meaning and fulfillment?”

“Will I be able to make a positive imprint on the world?”

“Will I ever be able to touch someone with my words?”

Those thoughts echo back to me now, as if I had been speaking directly to the ocean — my sanctuary, my mirror, my inspiration.

Corporate and entrepreneurial life took me through working and living in Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia, in multiple roles spanning consulting, private equity, market expansion, and eventually a C-Suite position, where I was tasked with growth hacking, corporate governance, and fundraising.

Yet, after three decades of navigating these mazes, I found myself revisiting the same questions I had asked thirty years ago.

Reflecting on my journey, I can recount countless failures and triumphs. But none of my achievements made me feel genuinely fulfilled or happy.

Then, one fateful day, my husband enrolled in the PADI scuba diving certification course and invited me to join him on the trip. I earned my diving license in my early twenties, and his invitation reignited a spark within me — my love for the ocean.

Returning to the ocean was an emotional and surreal experience. As the salty breeze stirred memories of my younger self, I felt the thrill of rediscovery, eager yet apprehensive. Confronting my deepest fear after a traumatic first dive, I immersed in the underwater world, where an overwhelming sense of love, peace, and acceptance embraced me. The silence, broken only by my gentle breathing, became a sacred space — truly, I felt I had encountered God.

The simplicity of existence in the aquatic realm offered a stark contrast to the complexities of daily routines above. Here, there were no deadlines to meet or expectations to fulfill, only the soothing ebb and flow of life in its purest form.

In that stillness, the grandeur of creation reminded me of our humble place within God’s masterpiece. The underwater world became a sanctuary, offering solace, clarity, and a profound connection to nature and the divine.

This spiritual awakening taught me that peace and connection are always within reach, often in the most unexpected places. The ocean had transformed from a mere setting into a crucible of challenge and a haven of healing, mirroring the depths of my soul and revealing long-buried truths.

Inspired by these revelations, I turned to writing not only to share my journey but also to seek clarity, find meaning and heal myself. Through my book Revisiting the Depths: Overcoming Fear and Finding Peace,  I aimed to convey the serenity, resilience and clarity I discovered beneath the waves, offering hope to those grappling with fears and uncertainties.

By sharing my story, I hoped to create a bridge between my personal perspective and the collective human experience, fostering connection and inspiring healing and growth.

My latest book, Life Lessons from Mom: For the Man You’ll Become, inspired by my son’s relentless quest for wisdom and insights, shares personal reflections and practical guidance for navigating life’s challenges, nurturing meaningful relationships, and building a legacy of love. At its heart is a framework I developed — the 4-Quadrants Personal Growth Model — created to support readers in their pursuit of balance and fulfillment.
