Author Interview Judy Moore

GIRL WITH PEN WELCOMES JUDY MOORE TO THE BLOG.  JUDY HAS BECOME ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS.  YOU WILL LOVE HER BOOKS.  JUDY WAS NICE ENOUGH TO TAKE TIME OUT OF HER SCHEDULE TO ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS MY READERS HAVE.

Judy Moore writes primarily mysteries and thrillers, as well as lighter family fiction. A longtime news writer, editor, and magazine feature writer, she has a master's degree in journalism and was a college journalism professor. Her fiction and nonfiction work has been published in numerous national publications, and her novels are published by BTGN publishers. A lifelong Florida resident, she is a former tennis pro and sports writer, so her stories sometimes have a sports backdrop. Her novel "Somebody Killed the Cart Girl" is a golf mystery, and her "Murder in Vail" is set on the ski slopes of Colorado. Her Christmas anthology "Christmas Interrupted," contains three popular novellas: "Airport Christmas," "The Holiday House Sitter," and "The Hitchhiker on Christmas Eve." An earlier novella, "Birds of Prey," and her new novelette "Football Blues," are also available on Amazon.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself to start?

I grew up in Miami playing competitive tennis. I was a highly ranked junior player, played for Florida State University, traveled in Europe, and later became a teaching pro. While at FSU, I became interested in journalism and went on to get a master’s degree in journalism at University of Florida. I worked as a newspaper reporter, magazine feature writer, and editor of national business publications. Because of my tennis background, I also wrote about tennis for several years, as well as other sports. Now, I’m at the point in my life where I can write what I really want to write—fiction. I grew up reading Agatha Christie and have always loved reading and watching mysteries. I’ve written two mystery novels and five novellas and have recently finished a third novel, a thriller that will be coming out soon.

Q: How are you feeling now that your latest book is out & on tour?

It always feels wonderful to have a book finished and published. My latest, Murder in Vail, is the story of a wealthy family who become snowbound with a killer in their midst. It’s coming out in audio soon. Because of my journalism background, I write fairly quickly and go at it pretty hard when I’m writing. It takes me about two months to write a full-length novel. Then I take a break for a few months before tackling another one. My life is not my own when I’m writing. But I prefer to do it that way. Once I start, I don’t want to stop until I finish. Then, I can relax and enjoy life for a while before jumping in again. After about two months, I can’t wait to get back to the computer.

Q: Out of all of your books, do you have a favorite character or couple?

I have several favorite characters. I love coming up with oddball characters, and I have at least one really unfiltered character in each book I write. But my favorite character is probably my 11-year-old matchmaker Lily in Airport Christmas. She and her two brothers are snowed-in by themselves at the Denver airport for three days over Christmas. She’s a compulsive matchmaker and is unrelenting in making matches of stranded single passengers.

Q: Are you currently working on a new book at this time?

I’ve just finished writing my longest novel yet, a thriller called “The Mother-in-Law.” It will be out later this year. I told my son-in-law that he will appreciate me much more after reading this book. She’s something else!

Q: How do your stories & characters develop?

I start with the victim and the killer and the why. Then I start masking the killer and the why, and spread other storylines around the crime to confuse the reader and throw them off the trail. The key for me is keeping the reader interested. To bore them is the ultimate sin. I like setting a scene so the reader can feel and see each scene, but I’m going to do that fairly quickly. I can’t stand reading books where the author spends a page describing a tree. I think that’s self-indulgent of the writer and torture for the reader. I would never dream of doing that to someone who bought my book to have a pleasurable reading experience.

Q: Do you have favorite author whose books you love to read?

I have a couple of favorite authors. Carl Hiaasen is probably the first. He’s so funny and so out there. What an imagination. The other is Michael Connelly who writes fabulous crime dramas, including the Harry Bosch detective novels and The Lincoln Lawyer series. They’re both Floridians and attended University of Florida’s journalism school where I went.

Q: What is your favorite genre to read & write?

I love to read and write mysteries, especially whodunits. I expect good dialogue and a lot of humor as well. That’s my goal when I write too. Down-to-earth characters who sometimes find themselves interacting with some pretty zany, unpredictable people.

Q: If you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would it be & why?

This probably sounds pretty shallow, but I think I’d enjoy having dinner with Julia Louis Dreyfus. The woman was on Saturday Night Live, Seinfeld, and Veep, three classic comedies that have really reflected our culture in the last quarter century. I’ll bet she really has some really good stories to tell. She’s so funny and has such good timing. I just fall on the floor laughing at Veep.

Q: Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

I never thought about being a writer. I was really good at math, like off the charts, so I always thought I would do something with math. I was one of only two girls selected for advanced calculus classes in college. But after six quarters of calculus, I couldn’t take it anymore. It didn’t seem practical to the real world. I changed majors and started taking journalism classes. It just felt right and writing came so naturally.

Q: Do you read all the reviews for your book(s)?

Yes, I enjoy hearing what people have to say and looking for ways I can improve. Most of the reviews are good, thank goodness, and it definitely gives a boost to my day to read a good one. The occasional bad ones aren’t fun, but I force myself to shrug them off. I learned a long time ago that you can never please everyone.

Q: Which do you prefer paperback, hardback or ebooks & why?

I definitely prefer paperbacks. They’re lighter to carry around and more flexible to read than hardbacks. I like reading a paper book, so I don’t care too much for reading on Kindle. I read outside a lot, and sometimes it’s harder to see the words clearly outside. I work on the computer most of the day, so when I’m reading for pleasure, I like being able to hold the book and turn the pages. (But thank goodness a lot of people like to read on Kindle! I sell a lot of ebooks.)

Q: What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? What format is it in (ebook, hardback or paperback) and who is the author?

I just finished reading “The Husband’s Secret” by Liana Moriarty in paperback. She’s a new find, an Australian author who does wonderful character studies with a little mystery involved too. I also read her “Big Little Lies,” which was made into an HBO series. The book is so much better than the television series. I usually love HBO, but they really hacked this one.

Q: Of all of the books you have written, do you have a favorite & why?

My favorite is “Murder in Vail,” the story of a wealthy widow whose spoiled children and their spouses come home to Vail for the holidays. They become snowbound together and the bodies start piling up. I love this book because each character has such a unique personality and many of them show a lot of growth during the book. And, there are a few twists and turns along the way that make it very hard to figure out who the villain is.

Q: When you aren't writing what do you do to relax and have fun?

Being a livelong Floridian, I love to swim and play golf. I don’t play much tennis anymore, but I play a mean game of ping pong. I love any kind of word game. Boggle and Word with Friends are my favorites. And I’ve been known to binge watch an HBO series or two. I love to travel too, and take at least three or four trips a year, the most recent being to the Caribbean, Spain, and Ireland. My favorite trip ever was to Iceland. I’ll definitely have to include it in a book someday.

How about a little of This or That:
Coffee or Tea? Tea
Chocolate or Vanilla? Vanilla
Kinky or Sweet? Sweet
Tall, dark & handsome or blonde, surfer type? Tall, dark & handsome
Dine in or Dine out? Dine out

AUTHOR INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself to start?

Well, let’s see…I’m a native Californian—So Cal to be precise. Me and my three brothers were brought up by a single mother, who always kept us busy in sports. It’s no surprise that I love sports and played some college football, and semi-pro baseball. I also love music, including classic rock, alternative/punk, Indie, and Americana. I am a psychotherapist by trade and have worked with the severely mentally ill for many years. My greatest accomplishment, however, may be my kids and grandkids—love ’em all.

Q: How are you feeling now that your latest book is out & on tour?

The latest is a great anthology through Books To Go Now Publishing. It’s a themed (redheaded character) work “Code Redhead” where all the proceeds go to help with cancer treatment and research. My story, “Day of the Dead,” is a Halloween time, psychological thriller. I’m hoping it will continue to make some money for cancer and bring some positive publicity to BTGN. I also just went under contract for the next full-length novel, “Avenging Angels,” through TouchPoint Press, which was inspired by my time doing investigations for child protective services in Riverside, CA. Waiting for the official editing process to begin. Besides that, I’m currently in the process of developing two works, including The Town Above the Christmas Tree (BTGN), which is book three in the series, and perhaps the last of the Twisted Family Holidays Collection. And I’m editing a third book. Things may slow down around the end of the year.

Q: How does your family feel about you being a published author?

They love it, particularly since they are all in the Twisted Family Holiday Collection.

Q: What inspires you to write?

I would say at this point it is the love of writing that inspires me the most. If nothing else it’s a legacy I can pass on to generations to come.

Q: Describe your book in 3 words?

Twisted psychological thriller

Q: Out of all of your books do you have a favorite character or couple?

I don’t know if I have a particular favorite, but I have had fun writing several. To mention a few: Aaron in “Saving Michael,” which was pulled a week after publishing due to legal problems with the publishing company. I hope to get it published again soon. Aaron is a fun enthusiastic middle schooler who has it all figured out. If had to pick a fav it would be “Lizzy,” in “In Passing.” She had to endure much strife, yet continued to see the beauty in life and stayed open to love. Lizzy was petite and read a lot from the time she could form a sentence. She gained strength from the books, allowing WORDS to be her superpower.

Q: Are you currently working on a new book at this time?

See above

Q: Do you have a routine you follow when you write? (i.e. listen to music, sit in a certain chair or at a certain desk)

My routine is to write. At coffee shops, bed, desk, wherever I can pull out the laptop and have a solitary moment to create.

Q: How do your stories & characters develop?

Generally, I have an idea of what I want to do and then start putting on the page. The characters are often dynamic, developing as I go.

Q: What was the first thing that came to your mind when your first book was published?

Just in time for Christmas! The first was the “Town Beneath the Christmas Tree” and I wanted it out in time to share with the family for Christmas. It was a gift to them.

Q: Do you have favorite author whose books you love to read?

I like to read Grisham, Brown, and Koontz when I can.

Q: What is your favorite genre to read & write?

Suspense, suspense, suspense and the subcategories: thriller and mystery.

Q: How do you go about creating the most “Swoonworthy” character?

Wow, good question. I would say that the swoonworthy characters have to be attractive, but I believe they need to be of high moral character and compassionate. I’m not into making bad boys the center of any story I write. Society has enough anti-role-models.

Q: Can you share something with everyone that inspires you?

I would have to say that family inspires me the most. And helping others to be the best self that is possible for them.

Q: If you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would it be & why?

If it’s a historical figure, then hands down it would Christ Jesus—too many reasons to count. Currently, it might be Matthew McConaughey, because I like his attitude and outlook, and he seems like a great guy to have a beer with. Plus, he’d be the ultimate wingman.

Q: As a child what did you want to do when you grew up?

Athlete: baseball or football…

Q: Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

When I went to college it was to play football, the major was not decided. Then life took its course, and, due to a very cool teacher, I took to psychology. I always liked writing even as a kid, but never had the time. Later, I played with it to do a professional book, but got bored quickly. So, when I was between jobs and relationships, I had the time and started writing fiction. It didn’t take long to get hooked.

Q: When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

Not until I was published a couple of times. When Sharon from BTGN asked me to write more (after they published the Christmas book), I thought maybe I’m not that bad after all.

Q: If you could go on a date with one of the male/female characters from a book who would it be (Character name, Book Title & Author's Name) and what would you do on that date?

There’s something special about Laura Shane from Dan Koontz’s lightning… Dinner, talk (about time travel—or not), perhaps a drink or two, and see where it goes from there.

Q: Do you have a favorite playlist that you listen to when you write?

It depends on the book and the genre. For instance, I wrote the short story, “Confederate,” for an English outfit that was inspired by Virgil Caine from The Band’s, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” So, I listened to that song, and others like it, to stay I the mood.

Q: Do you read all the reviews for your book(s)?

I do read all the reviews that are posted to sites—that I know of. Most have been kind so far with an occasional criticism that makes me pause and, in one instance, a better writer.

Q: Which do you prefer paperback, hardback or ebooks & why?

I think hard copies are the coolest and would love to have a JR Wirth book in hardback. Having said that, I like paperbacks best because they can go on the run. No need to be careful (drops don’t matter), no plugin needed, and no need to keep up with the Jones’s, as in readers and the cell phone market. But most of all because when you are through, you have a tangible item on a shelf (like my albums), and not a dot in a computer that will disappear when the pulse hits.

Q: What are you currently reading? Are you enjoying it? What format is it in (ebook, hardback or paperback) and who is the author?

I have two books waiting to be read, but not the time at present, Inferno—Brown and Midnight—Koontz.

Q: Of all of the books you have written do you have a favorite & why?

I would have to say that “The Town Beneath the Christmas Tree” is my favorite since it was a gift to the grandkids, and is very Dickens’ like. Though the original had a few flaws due to the urgency it which it was edited, the updated version in the “Twisted Family Holidays Collection” is well done with more fun features.

Q: When you aren't writing what do you do to relax and have fun?

I guess I would say that I get caught up on shows: Fargo, The Killing, The Bridge, Stranger Things, and the like. I also like movies and spending time with people I enjoy… Album shopping.

Okay now some fun ones:

Q: What are your favorite types of heroines? Do you like the damsel in distress who needs saving or the kick-ass variety? Why?

I probably go more for the damsel. In my writings, my girls are strong emotionally, yet keep their femininity.

Q: Can you tell us about your worst date ever?

It was the date that never happened. She showed up at my house, unexpectedly, to take me to a Journey concert. I already had plans, which led to a discussion (long emotionally-draining discussion) that led to our demise.

Q: What is your one “guilty pleasure”?

Chocolate!!!

Q: What is or was your most embarrassing moment or the craziest thing you have ever done? Come on you can’t hold out on everyone. LOL

Wow, too any to report… Clearing out a mosh pit at a Dickies concert, after my little brother got hit (fight).

Q: Do you have a favorite love scene from a book or movie? Which book/movie & scene? I’ll keep a secret or two

How about a little of This or That:
Coffee or Tea? Coffee
Chocolate or Vanilla? Chocolate
Kinky or Sweet? Kinkysweet
Tall, dark & handsome or blonde, surfer type? Exotic – smoky bedroom eyes and full lips
Dine in or Dine out? Either, I can cook a mean meal when I please
Sunset or Sunrise? Both
Steak or Chicken? Chicken
Cats or Dogs? Fish
Dom or Sub? Both without the pain… only the pleasure
Summer or Winter? Christmas or the Fourth??? Both
Shower or Bath? Depends
Beer or Wine? Depends on the company
Scary or Comedy? Psychological
Biker or Billionaire? In between
Thong or Comando? Both
Rock or Country? Rock though some Americana is definitely Country inspired.
Vanilla or Toys? Both
Pink or Black? Black for me—pink for my partner

Krystal writes magick and Emma doesn’t. If you are looking for leisurely-paced sweet romance, her books are probably not for you. However, for those looking for a story filled with adventure, passion, and just enough humor to make you laugh out loud. Welcome home!

Author Interview with Tony Banks

GIRL WITH PEN WANTS TO GIVE A WARM WELCOME TO TONY BANKS WHO WAS GRACIOUS ENOUGH TO ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS FOR MY READERS.

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself to start?

I am a freelance writer who writes mostly erotic romance under the pen name of Angel Ray. I have books already published with Luminosity Publishing and New Concepts Publishing. I also have upcoming books with Books To Go Now and Extasy Books.

Q: How are you feeling now that your latest book is out & on tour?

I always feel good whenever a book of mine is published.

Q: Out of all of your books do you have a favorite character or couple?

If I had to pick a favorite character from one of my books it would probably be Lexi Gifford from my first published romance MR. INNOCENT published by Luminosity Publishing. She runs her own business and she knows what she wants and she knows how to get it.

Q: Are you currently working on a new book at this time?

I always seem to be working on something. If it's not a new romantic story, I'm usually posting pieces on sites like Commaful and Wattpad.

Q: Do you have favorite author whose books you love to read?

My current favorite authors would have to be Patricia Briggs, Lilith Saintcrow and Yasmine Galenorn.

Q: If you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would it be & why?

If he were still alive I would like to have dinner with the Marquis de Sade. The reason why is because someone who “inspired” the word sadism would be someone who would be very interesting to have dinner with!

Q: As a child what did you want to do when you grew up?

As a child I either wanted to be a NASCAR racer or a superhero. LOL!

Q: Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

Actually, when I was a teenager, I wanted to be a rock star. LOL!

Q: Do you read all the reviews for your book(s)?

Yes, actually, I do. Fortunately, all but one or two I've read have been positive.

Q: Which do you prefer paperback, hardback or ebooks & why?

I really don't have a perferance, although I do like how e-books don't take as much space as paperbacks and hardbacks!

Q: Of all of the books you have written do you have a favorite & why?

Out of all the books I've published thus far, if I had to pick one as a favorite it would probably be my lesbian romance MOTHER FIGURE that's scheduled to be published by Extasy Books. The story is about a young woman named Cassie whose mother leaves the family when she's very young. She eventually develops a motherly-type relationship with her father's girlfriend Julia who lives with them for a time. They lose touch with each other for a while when Julia breaks up with Cassie's father. When they reconnect, Julia invites Cassie to stay and work with her for a time after she graduates from high school. It is then that Cassie discovers that her feelings for Julia got beyond looking at her as merely a mother figure, especially after she catches her in bed with another woman. I think the main reason why this is my favorite is because of how I set up the interaction between Cassie & Julia.

Q: When you aren't writing what do you do to relax and have fun?

I mostly listen to music, read and watch movies.

Q: What are your favorite types of heroines? Do you like the damsel in distress who needs saving or the kick-ass variety? Why?

The kick-ass variety since they're more interesting-and fun!-to write, at least for me.

Q: Do you have a favorite love scene from a book or movie? Which book/movie & scene?

This might sound a little weird, but one of my favorite “love” scenes is from a movie from the seventies called Kentucky Fried Movie. The movie is a “parody” of various movies and TV shows. The last scene shows a couple sitting on the couch watching the news. When they start making out, the newscaster “acts” like he can see them and invites the cameraman and others to “watch” along with him and proceed to cheer the couple on. I know this is supposed to be a “comedy” scene, but the lovemaking part of it is pretty intense.

Coffee or Tea? Tea

Chocolate or Vanilla? BOTH

Kinky or Sweet? A lot of kinky with a little sweet!

Dine in or Dine out? Dine in.

Steak or Chicken? BOTH

Dom or Sub? A little of both.

Summer or Winter? Both have their merits and problems.

Shower or Bath? It used to be a bath but now it's a shower.

Beer or Wine? Beer

Scary or Comedy? A scary comedy!

Sunset or Sunrise? BOTH

Biker or Billionaire? Billionaire because they have money (of course!).

Rock or Country? How about country rock?

Vanilla or Toys? Probably vanilla since I'm not much into toys (other than strap-ons!).

Pink or Black? BOTH

Can You Share With Readers Your Top Ten Fantasies?

All of my fantasies are pretty much all in my books!

THANK YOU TONY FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS.  WE LEARNED A LOT ABOUT YOU.  IF YOU HAVEN'T READ OF ANY TONY'S BOOKS YOU SHOULD CHECK THEM OUT.

Everybody loves marketing whiz Charlie Solanger—except the woman he really wants.
PAINT, PROMOTIONS & PERFECTION
Creative genius Charlie Solanger has it all: good looks, money, intelligence, charm. And when he swoops in to save Reynolds Paint Company with a brilliant marketing campaign, he has all the ladies in the office vying for his attention. Everyone except math whiz Valerie Wilson.
Val’s not happy Charlie stole her promotion. Worse, his brand of flirtatious charm is reminiscent of her cheating ex-fiancĂ©. So, how come she can’t get him out of her head? The more she challenges him, the more interested—and interesting—he becomes. What secrets is Charlie hiding, and who or what is behind the sudden mysterious drain on their company’s funds? The only way to find out is to join forces. Then it will be a battle of wills...and a triumph of hearts.
When I awoke, I was surrounded by two waiters and a naked lady on a cloud. I blinked and the lady turned out to be a painting of an angel on the ceiling. Was it a replica of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel? A pair of deep blue eyes peered into mine. The rich scent of Dark Water flooded my senses. I smiled. Then I remembered.
Charlie must have caught me when I fell because I was half lying on his lap instead of the hard floor. I lifted my head and struggled to move, but he held me in place. “Thank God. Stay still. Take your time. No need to get up.” Worry lines, as my mother liked to call them, creased his forehead.
“I’m okay.”
“You don’t look it… Did you eat breakfast?”
“Yes, of course.”
He grimaced. “Lemme guess. Grapefruit?”
“And a latte,” I said proudly.
He quirked a brow. “Oh well, that counts.”
I had the strangest urge to run my hand over his face and smooth away the wrinkles like the sheets on my bed in the morning. “I’m okay. Let me up.”
“All right, but take it slow. No sudden movements.”
I did as he asked, gradually raising onto my arms and getting up and into the chair Charlie helped me into.
The waiters hovered solicitously. One had a wet towel and the other, a glass of ice water. Charlie grasped the towel and pressed it on the back of my neck with one hand and grabbed the glass of water with the other. He held it to my lips. “Here, drink this.”
I obediently took a sip. “I’m okay. Really.”
How to tell the man that the pressure of his strong hand against my neck and the smell of his cologne was going to send me into a faint all over again? Thankfully, he took me at my word and removed the towel and set it next to my plate. He eyed me with suspicion. “Are you sure?”
I nodded, relieved when he finally walked back to his side of the table and sat. “God, what a self-centered ass I am. I’m sorry, Val. I could kick myself. I should have held my tongue.”
“No, I’m…I’m glad you told me.”
Charlie held one hand across his heart. Was it pounding as hard as mine? “Not another word until you finish your pasta. I can’t go through that again.”
