Lady and the Tribe by Brenda Ridgley

Wives, mothers, and career women—we have all fallen victim to the silent epidemic that is, literally . . . letting ourselves go. Not the makeup free, yoga pants, weight gain routine. Little by little, we have allowed our preferences, interests, and individuality to slip away until we no longer recognize ourselves outside of our role as wives, mothers, or professionals. Who we are has become what we do.

In the process, our friendships have become the casualty of a “busy life” and lack consistency and depth. We have a gaping hole inside us that longs to be filled. How do we reclaim who we really are and fill this empty space that seemed to appear from nowhere? The answer lies in our Tribe. Our best friends see us more clearly than we see ourselves and are representations and extensions of our individuality. They are our companions, cheerleaders, and counselors—always in our corner. They are the branches of our tree of life that lift and support us, so we can flourish. Our Tribe is the family with whom we choose to live our life . . . with no strings attached.

Lady and the Tribe is a blueprint for building deep connections. As you read, you’ll be swept away on a journey of friendship as the author shares her own personal stories and those of other women. In the process, you’ll discover how to find, nurture, and deepen friendships and create a Tribe culture that is unique to you.

We can become whole again through the power of connection.

When three or more gather, we are Tribe.

Awakening

Today, a dichotomy exists between our concurrent hyper connectedness—the immediate and ongoing ability to check up on faraway friends via social media—and our elevated sense of emotional alienation. Add to that, we as a culture are so focused on career success, financial accomplishments, and family milestones that we often lack the time and energy to connect with others beyond those arenas. Despite being surrounded by people, places and things, somehow we are left feeling alone. We are not alone because we lack relationships. We are alone because these relationships lack depth, knowledge, and certainty. In his column, “Loneliness is Killing Us,” George Monbiot suggests that, much as we labeled the Stone Age, Iron Age, Space Age, and Information Age, this era will be called “The Age of Loneliness.”

Almost without noticing, we have distanced ourselves from the people who choose to love us without obligation. These closest personal friendships are ever present—yet do not demand our time. They are an advocate in our corner, mirroring back to us who we really are. This neglect is not without a price. We must actively seek, grow, and maintain these relationships. If we fail, we won’t just lose a friend—we’ll lose a piece of ourselves.

The wonderful thing is that no matter where you are right now with your relationships, you can exponentially improve your connections by deciding to give them a little more attention and intention.

“Callie?” Levon tilted his head and half-smiled. “What is it about you that makes me want to forget this life and just be with you?”

“My animal magnetism?”

“Probably,” he murmured. “What did I do that made you hate me?”

“I don’t hate you.” She could be evasive when she wanted to—like right now.

He nodded. “Salina?”

She tensed and pressed her lips together. Salina had a lot to do with why she couldn’t be alone with him. “She’s part of it.”

“Cards on the table,” Levon said. “I never slept with her. Never wanted to. That night in Dallas, she followed me to my room. Said she wanted to meet Haven and I believed her. All she wanted was to bed one of us. Didn’t matter which.”

She’d heard this before.

“She told everyone we slept together because it gave her credibility,” he said. “But we didn’t. She saw your photo in my guitar case and knew there was no chance. She told me to pay her a grand and she’d forget ever being in my room. When I said no, she told everyone we slept together.”

Callie knew most of those details, too—all except the thing about the photo. “I saw you kiss her.” The memory had been imprinted on her mind and tore at her heart.

“You saw a misunderstanding and a woman who wanted to hurt you. She did that just to piss you off and it worked.” Levon held both of her hands. “I don’t know what you’re not telling me, but those are my truths. I love you, Callie Mae King. Have since we met.”

Deciding to be more actively present and grateful in the moment, I ventured back to the beautiful Kensington Gardens the following day. It was there that I made my first gratitude journal entry:

I am sitting here in the beautiful Kensington Gardens in London. It’s another gorgeous, sunny day, and the sun's warmth can be comfortably felt through the shade of the trees around me. The sound of the five surrounding water fountains gently flowing into a beautiful pond provides a sense of tranquility. I’m surrounded by relaxed families, couples, groups of friends, and even some who appear to be fellow solo travelers. I feel at peace in this moment, witnessing the miracles of life all around me. There is so much beauty in the present. I am thankful for this serenity, this beautiful day, and these views.

That trip went on to be the most amazing trip I’ve ever been on, even though I went alone. I made so many memories in London that I could write another book dedicated entirely to that trip. I got to tour many historical places, stand in spots where world-altering events took place, experience a day at boozy brunch with locals, and my birthday the following day at an inflatable adult obstacle course with new friends. I partied the night away with people I’d never see again. I ate the most delicious meals in historical settings. I danced with and kissed a tall, dark, handsome Italian man. I drank pints with my dinner each night and lived out things I’d only previously dreamed of. I met people from all over the world and learned so much. More importantly, I began the steps of exploration I needed to find myself again. It wasn’t until the end of the trip that the most magical thing happened, but, first, we must look at some of the other things I had been doing behind the scenes along the way and leading up to the trip!

Review of the Sisters of Tall Pines by Emerald O'Brien

Two sisters with a troubled past. A murderer with a kill list. How long until he gets to them? Grace was seven years old when her sister told her she saw a dead body in their childhood foster home. Between that and the drug trafficking her foster father was eventually arrested for, it’s no surprise that Grace wound up a detective. But Grace’s world is turned upside down when she discovers her current homicide investigation is connected to similar murders in the neighbouring city of Amherst. Is she chasing a serial killer? Going back to the city where she began her career is complicated to say the least—her old colleagues seem hellbent on jamming her up. Grace’s sister Madigan isn’t a detective in the official sense, but that doesn’t stop her from answering a call for help from John Talbot, another child who spent time in the same foster home. John believes someone is after him…and it might be related to a crime their foster father committed—one that was never pinned on him. It’s not the first time John has dragged Madigan into a dangerous situation, but her loyalty knows no bounds. When the sisters discover their foster father was murdered in prison, their goals shift to staying alive. It seems that anyone with a connection to their past is in danger. Someone is tying up loose ends…and fast. It’s a race against time. And it will take more than the bonds they’ve forged to survive. Lovers of Tess Gerritsen, Lisa Regan, Kendra Elliot, Allison Brennan, Melinda Leigh, and Meghan O'Flynn are sure to enjoy this gripping, heart-wrenching, and totally unpredictable series by Emerald O'Brien. MY REVIEW:

THE SISTERS OF TALL PINES IS THE 5TH AND FINAL BOOK IN THE KNOX AND SHEPPARD SERIES.  THIS STORY IS A FITTING END TO THE SERIES AND IT WAS NICE TO SEE THE SISTERS FIND THEIR HAPPY ENDINGS.  EMERALD IS A MASTERFUL STORY TELLER AND BRINGS HER CHARACTERS AND STORY TO LIFE. SISTERS OF TALL PINES CAN BE READ AS A STAND ALONE BUT I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING THE BOOKS IN ORDER.  YOU WILL GET SO MUCH MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHARACTERS AND WHAT HAS HAPPENED.

GRACE AND MADIGAN ARE FOSTER SISTERS WHO ARE SO DIFFERENT FROM ONE ANOTHER.  THROUGH THEIR LOVE AND CLOSENESS, THEY ARE ABLVE TO SURVIVE AND ESCAPE A DANGERANGEOUS FOSTER CARE HOME.  EVEN AFTER ESCAPING THE FOSTER CARE HOME, THEY REMAIN IN TOUCH AND VERY CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER. THROUGH THEIR LOVE AND SUPPORT OF ONE ANOTHER, THEY SURVIVE AND FACE MANY CHALLENGES.  SISTERS OF TALL PINES IS FILLED WITH ALOT OF SUSPENSE, TWIST, TURNS, BETRAYALS AND EVEN FINDING LOVE.  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU READ THIS SERIES AND ANYTHING BY EMERALD O'BRIEN.  SHE IS A FAVORITE AUTHOR OF MINE.  5 STARS.
