Encore! - Excerpt

#1 It was there one night when I was up on stage in my latex cat suit…my gimmick, my platform a mask, a Venetian masque. Always in one of three colors, purple, hot pink or green. I was an entirely different person as I sang my gut out and played my violin. Yeah you heard me right - violin. That night he stood at the edge of the stage, looking up at me, with a mischievous grin on his face. Mr. Violin Virtuoso himself, Daniel Kennedy. I had noticed him at the club a time or two before.
We had studied together in New York years ago. Only now, I could tell he was second guessing who I really was. Who is this woman who can make a violin weep, though not nearly as well as I can. She can, none the less, make the angels shed tears.
About half way through my set, I happened to glance down at this dangerously striking man and noticed he was still smiling. He raised his drink. Was it in a mock salute, or was it more? I was too into what I was doing to tell, much less care.
I never, ever mingled with the crowd after a show. Not that I wouldn't love to every now and then. No, I was afraid some young drunk jerk would pull off my mask, exposing my identity to the world. Then Archangel would be no more.
My requirements for playing in the clubs was a cab ride home and for the owner to escort me to the waiting cab, just in case. Other than that, I played for free. Self promotion at its best.
I was putting my violin away when I heard someone behind me. I immediately turned to see who it was. And Daniel Kennedy stood not three feet from me. In my personal space, again.
"Where did you learn to play?" he asked.
"Around," I replied smugly.
"Hmmm, mysterious. I like that. Could I interest you in a drink Ms. Archangel?"
"Thank you, but no. I make it a rule to never go out for drinks with clubbers."
"Ah, is that what I am?"
"Aren't you?"
The club owner appeared out of the hallway. "Cab's here. You ready, babe?"
I noted Daniel's grimace at the familiarity Jake had used with me. "Yeah, almost," I replied.
"Well, Mr. Kennedy, I look forward to seeing you brighten up my audience again soon." I smiled and turned toward the hall.
"Who are you?"
"Archangel, kind sir." Oh, he was fun.
"No, really, who are you? I feel we've met before."
"Oh, I bet you say that to all the girl's you try to pick up." I teased, but he wasn't deterred.
"What sort of name is Archangel, sweet?"
"What sort of name is Kennedy?" I shot back. "I thought you were French. Kennedy is anything but French."
"My mother's maiden name, if you must know. My father's name is much too hard for English speaking fans."
"Scottish or Irish Kennedy's?" I taunted walking down the hall and towards the back door, my cab, and freedom from this inquisitive and delicious man.
"Scottish, why?"
"Just curious, that's all."
As I reached the door Jake was holding open, I turned and looked down the hall. Daniel had stopped, his arms folded over his chest, his legs wide apart. He was quite a handsome thing with all his bling, tight jeans, T-shirt, and jacket. His face was rough with scruff. And that hair! My God what woman wouldn't die for a head of luscious hair like that?
Rather than continue drooling, I blew a crimson-stained kiss in his direction. "This is for you, Mr. Daniel Kennedy."
He played along, pretending to catch my kiss in his hand. He closed his hand and placed it over his heart. His smile made my body tingle in places-well in places that it hadn't tingled in quite a long time.
Raising my arm as high as it would go, I waved then pivoted on the ball of my foot. "Until next time, Mr. Daniel Kennedy. Good night."

EXCERPT

Jessica closed the flap of a box and stood, rubbing the small of her back with the knuckles of her right hand. With this box her office was officially all packed up. All of her cases had been reassigned to other attorneys, and she was ready for the next phase of her life.
A phase she was in complete control of.
"What in the hell is this?" A voice thundered from her door.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She'd been hoping to be out of the office before he returned. She'd timed her resignation for when he took his month-long vacation every year, so she wouldn't have to have this confrontation. She'd wanted to be gone before he came back. With two other senior partners she'd been hoping HR didn't inform him.
She turned and faced the man who had helped to destroy her dreams..
"What does it look like I'm doing?"
She caught the flash of anger and surprise in his eyes before he narrowed them.
In twenty-eight years she'd never once talked back to him. She'd always done exactly what he'd told her, never bucking under his or her mother's plans for her.
"It looks like someone throwing a fit because she didn't get her way."
She wasn't throwing a fit. She was throwing away a life, a life that was all but destroying her.
"No, I'm not throwing a fit. I'm taking charge of my life. I'm no longer going to do what you and mother want me to, to suit your plans. I'm living it for me."
She didn't need or want to hear what she knew would be a tirade on her responsibility to him, to her mother, and to the family.
Jessica put on her coat and picked up the box. Ignoring the sputtering and yelling coming from her father she walked out the door of the office she'd never wanted or deserved. Just because her great grandfather had started the law firm didn't mean she shouldn't have had to prove herself before making junior partner.
She guessed she had proved herself years ago when she'd had to let the best thing to ever happen to her walk out the door because of a case.
She'd put it aside, because there was nothing she could do about it. She'd seen the anger and hatred in his eyes when Case had walked into her office that day. It hadn't mattered her heart was in pieces on the floor to anyone in the room, as she'd watched the man she'd been planning on spending the rest of her life with and the daughter she'd never get to have, walk out the door.
She'd gone home, opened a bottle of wine, and cried deep gut-wrenching tears. Three days later she walked into the Cobble Hill women's shelter and volunteered her services. If she couldn't have Case in her life, she could do something that was important to him and his family.
It was a move that had changed everything for her. Effective today, she was now the family attorney in residence. For once she was going to be doing something good with the degree she'd gotten because of parental pressure.

EXCERPT

Kemble strode around the car without a word, got behind the wheel and slammed the door. His lips were a thin, determined line. Then he seemed to see her for the first time. “Jane, that…that cheek looks really painful.” His face contorted with an angry look. “I should have been over here first thing this morning.” He was angry with himself, of course.
“I could have gone to the doctor if I needed to, you know,” she said.
He snorted. “You never want anything for yourself, Jane. I’ll take care of that too.”
What did he mean by that? The motor purred to life and Kemble put his arm over the back of her seat to turn and look out the rear window as he backed out. His fingers brushed her shoulder. She closed her eyes as the sensation shot up her spine. Did he have to be so careless?
As they turned onto Palos Verdes West she glanced over to him. He was fairly vibrating with…nervous tension? Determination? She couldn’t quite figure it out. He surprised her by sliding into the little shopping center behind the Admiral Risty, an old-school, red-booth dinner place with a wide-water view of the Pacific. “Aren’t you going to be late for dinner at home?”
“Yes, I am.” He nodded his head convulsively. The man was sweating.
“You want to loosen the tie or something?” He really looked like he was about to choke.
“No.” He took a big breath and let it out slowly. Then he turned to her. “I have something I want to ask you, Jane. And I don’t want you to say anything until I’m done explaining.”
“Uh. Okay.” Jane was getting a very bad feeling about this. It was going to be something about what he wanted to do with her mother. She just knew it. And she wouldn’t be able to accept his largesse, so he’d try to bully her into it.
He looked out over the parked cars. “I’m never going to get magic. I talked to Senior and he agrees. We think the gene is recessive in me. I’ve known it for a while.”
She started to protest, but he held up a hand. It was shaking a little. That stopped her far more effectively than anything he could have said. He wasn’t the kind of guy to tremble.
“So.” He acted as though that settled everything. “So he agrees that I ought to get on with my life. Settle down. And if I’m not waiting for the bolt of lightning, well, then I can marry whomever I want. So I’m asking you.”
Jane felt like she’d been struck deaf, dumb and blind by that lightning bolt. Kemble was… asking her to… marry him? After all these years, he’d realized he loved her…
“Now don’t say no,” he rushed on. “Just because we’re not in love doesn’t mean this can’t work out. You need a refuge Jane, and if we marry, I can give that to you.”
Jane carefully shut her mouth, though that didn’t mean she could breathe.
Kemble looked down at his hands, still on the steering wheel. “The family already loves you. And I’ll make sure your mother is taken care of. Enough money cures everything, Jane, and if it’s one thing I have, it’s money.” His eyes were so earnest it might break her heart.
He’d given up. So he might as well marry her. Something heavy sat on her chest.
He got an anxious look. “So…uh…what do you think?”
She hardly trusted herself to speak.
“Oh. Wait.” He lifted his hips to get his hand into the pocket of his slacks, and drew out a small square velveteen box. It said the name of the department store at the top of the hill on the bottom. He fumbled with it until he got it right side up and popped it open. A diamond ring gleamed in the rosy light of the setting sun. The setting was simple, just a band with three medium diamonds set in it. They glinted in the afternoon light.
“I didn’t think you’d want one of those big diamonds that are always catching on everything. These… these are nice stones though.” He cleared his throat.
It was actually just the kind of ring she would want the man she loved to give her. But not like this. She took a breath. “Kemble, you don’t want to marry me.” It took all the courage she had to speak those words.
“But I do,” he protested. “You’re perfect. You’re smart. You’re a calming influence on the family, especially the younger ones.” His voice softened. “And marrying me will give you a place, Jane. Let me take care of you.”
She couldn’t marry Kemble when he didn’t love her. That would be too selfish.
He put the box with the ring on the dashboard and took both her hands in his larger ones. After the shock that went straight to her groin and the points of her breasts, what she noticed was that the warmth, the slight moisture born of his anxiety, enveloped her with his inherent goodness. She felt…maybe not loved, but at least treasured. “I need you, Jane,” he said. “And I think you need me too. Sometimes life just provides solutions we aren’t expecting.”
The words were simple, spoken from his heart. He needed her. It was the one ploy that might get her to agree to this. She couldn’t bear how unhappy he’d been lately. Maybe this solution freed him from the razor-sharp pain of wondering if magic would ever happen for him, thinking he’d never be good enough. She wanted to believe that, because suddenly, she wanted to throw all sense and caution off the cliffs at the Breakers and accept him. Married to Kemble Tremaine, just as she’d dreamed since she was fourteen. A real member of the Tremaine family, with a right to make tira misu for their dinner or cut fresh flowers for the table.
There was another problem. “What if you find your destined love after we’re married?”
“Never going to happen.” He shrugged as though it didn’t matter to him. But in his blue eyes she saw that it did. He wasn’t over mourning his loss yet.
But maybe someday he could be. Maybe time would heal his regret. Maybe they could have something together, if not true love, then companionship, respect. That was more than she was like to have any other way. “You have to promise me something, Kemble Tremaine.”
“Anything.”
He didn’t mean that, of course. He couldn’t give her the one thing she really wanted. And God, he was so close to her, he was overwhelming any sense she had at all.
“Promise that if you ever do find the one really meant for you, you’ll tell me. I’ll set you free the next moment with no regrets.” Well, none she wouldn’t have anyway, whether she married him or not. She’d always regret he didn’t love her.
His brows drew together sharply. He really hadn’t thought this out, had he?
Finally he nodded. “Okay.” He cleared his throat. “Does that mean you will do me the honor of being my wife?”
God help her. She nodded.

Cole gestured to the remaining shot glass on the bar counter. “Do you want Levi’s shot?” he asked. “Levi swears he becomes tone deaf if he drinks while playing so he passed the drink up.”
“No thanks,” I said before swerving my head back and forth between Cole and Evan. “So identical twins? Are you very close? Is twin ESP a real thing?”
“No, but I can read your mind and sorry we’re not interested,” Evan replied with a stony expression. “We’re not into threesomes, so get it out of your head.”
“Huh?”
“I know a lot of girls have a fantasies about being with twins. Especially two as hot as us.” Evan smirked. “But it’s just not happening, sweetheart.”
“Will you shut it, Evan.” Levi came up from behind me and I could hear his annoyance. He turned his head to face me. “He’s just messing with you. My brothers have a warped sense of humor.”
“You guys were really great,” I said as I felt all of their eyes on me. When no one replied, I asked, “How did you come up with the name? Trojan Jedi is um… pretty unique.”
“We combined a reference to sex and Star Wars,” Evan said. “Because what two things do guys like better?”
Rain rolled her eyes. “Obviously, they came up with it before I joined. We’re open to better suggestions.”
“Not happening. We already have a rep and we don’t want to alienate the fans,” Evan said.
“By fans, he means the girls who come to the shows to sleep with them after.” Rain directed her statement at me. I felt the stirrings of jealousy deep inside and couldn’t help but hope she was referring to the twins and not the youngest brother.
Rain slunk off the bar stool and slowly walked to stand in front of Levi and myself. “Our break is almost over, so I’m going to head back up,” Rain said. “Nice meeting you, Delia.”
“Great to meet you too.” Rain made eye contact with Levi and I felt something silently pass between them before she turned and walked away. Her movements and voice were leisurely as if she knew she was worth waiting for. The brothers waved and followed Rain back to the stage area.
I cleared my throat. “So, do you have to go too?”
Levi smiled. I loved how his hazel eyes glittered with amusement as he considered me. “I have a minute or two.” He took a sip of water, but kept his eyes locked on my face. Once finished, he set the water bottle behind me on the bar counter. “Did I tell you how glad I am you came?”
“You may have mentioned it.” I was beaming at him like a complete fool. Levi was such a departure from most guys I’d hung around. He was sweet and open and I loved spending time with him.
“Can you stay a while?” he asked. “We could hang out after…”
I lifted my eyebrows. “Just hang out?”
Levi let loose a strangled laugh. “Oh… the stuff Rain said, she was talking about Cole and Evan.”
“And not you?” I asked while attempting to keep out any inflection from my voice.
Levi shook his head. “That’s not my thing.”
“Sleeping with girls after your rock show isn’t your thing?” I didn’t conceal the disbelief in my tone. Levi shrugged and looked a little uncomfortable with the topic. Of course, his reaction made me all the more curious. “Do you have a girlfriend?”
“No girlfriend. And my brothers think I’m lame, but I don’t like hooking up with randoms each night like they do.” He scrubbed his jaw and continued, “I’ve had two serious girlfriends and things ended in both relationships because things ran their course.”
I smirked. “Are you a real boy? Because I don’t think I’ve met any guy like you before. You’re nice, polite, and into committed relationships. There must be some secret flaw you’re hiding.”
“Maybe you’ve just been hanging out with the wrong type of guys.”

“If you’re in trouble, I know some people who can help.”
“I’m not in trouble. Really, I’m not. I mean who would want to kill me? I know bankers aren’t exactly popular—” she lets loose a shaky laugh “—but I’m harmless.”
Harmless? Not sure about that. Jess sends my heart racing, makes my skin clammy. She’s driving me insane. Harmless? No way.
“What do you want me to do?” I ask.
“Do?”
“Shall I stick around?”
“Oh. No, you don’t need to do that.”
“I don’t mind.”
“I’m fine. Seriously. Thank you for today. You must be tired and I bet your side hurts.”
It does, but I’m not going to admit to that. “It’s fine.”
“Look about that kiss….”
“That was my fault.”
“I kissed you.”
“You did.” I can’t resist letting my mouth curve upwards. She kissed me, but I don’t know if that’s a bad or a good thing. While my pride basks in it, the voice inside that keeps pulling at my gut wants to scream at her to run while she still can. I’m no good for her. “But I kissed you back,” I point out. “And I should not have been… er… touching you out there.”
She draws her bottom lip between her teeth. “It’s okay.”
Hell, how do those two tiny words send an arrow of need straight to my cock? It’s okay that I was kissing her? Or touching her up? It’s okay that I want her so badly I nearly bent her over my bike to fuck her?
Before I can dwell on it anymore and make an even bigger fool of myself, I get to my feet. “Will you let me stay?”
“I don’t think so. It’s too risky.”
A hard knot forms in my throat. I’m more dangerous to her than a crazed gunman it seems. She might be right. If—when—I find that money, her whole life is going to come crashing down.
“Don’t answer the door to anyone. Be careful. Call me if you need me. In fact, call me tomorrow.” She follows me to the door. “Please?” I add as uncertainty dashes across her face.
Jess opens the door and I step out. “I’ll call you,” she says when I turn to face her.
“Promise?”
She rolls her eyes and her mouth curves. “I promise.”
Those lush lips snare my attention and my own smile drops. My skin feels hot and itchy, my pulse urgent. This is insane. I rest an arm against the door frame, my feet still firmly planted on the other side of the threshold and bring my mouth slowly down on hers. She softens but doesn’t touch me. We’re divided by the invisible line between the corridor and her room. I can’t help thinking of it as symbolic. We’re divided by secrets and lies.
Not that any of that matters once our lips connect. I swear I’ve never wanted to kiss a woman so much. Kisses are about the end game. But not with Jess. I want to drown in her kisses, to kiss her all day and see if I ever tire of them. I suspect it’s unlikely.

Happy young couple in love

MY REVIEW:

I have never read any of Samantha's books before.  I was quite impressed with her writing, characters and storyline.  Her storyline was so believable and I loved Jess and Hunter.  Their chemistry was instant from the very first moment they set eyes on each other.  Hunter was a total jerk at first but everything changed when he realized Jess was in danger and when he found out the truth about her.  He was so desperate that he made lots of mistakes like not trusting his judgment of Jess.

Hunter became very protective of Jess when he realized she was in danger.  He did whatever he could to protect her.  Jess had lived a tough life and made lots of mistakes which she was now paying for.  Instead of giving up, she was trying to better herself which was so hard to do when she was constantly on the run.  She couldn't allow herself to become close to anyone.  Jess was afraid they would find out the truth about her and would want nothing to do with her.  Jess and Hunter find themselves falling in love but will Jess's past come back and destroy their love?

I love Samantha's writing.  She writes with such feeling and her characters and storyline are so believable.  There are a lot of young women out there who are facing the same choices that Jess had to make and also her mistakes.  Samantha portrays the life that Jess had to live very nicely in the story.  If you are looking for action, suspense, mystery and romance this book is for you.  I highly recommend you read this book.  You will not regret it.  I could not put it down.  I am looking forward to reading more of Samantha's books in the future.  5 stars

Synopsis

I don't believe in fairy tales.

I don't believe in glass slippers.

I don't believe in Prince-Freaking-Charming.

Cinderella can kiss my ass.

I kiss frogs, sometimes even toads.

I've given up on meeting Mr. Right, instead it seems all I meet is Mr. Wrong, Mr. Very-Wrong and even, Mr. Lets-Not-Even-Go-There.

Fairy tales are for morons.

Well, that's what I thought until Gabriel Black barged through my life, turning everything upside down.

He's hot, sexy and little rough around the edges.

But, there's something dark inside, I can feel it, taste it and smell it.

Now I'm left wondering if he's my Prince Charming or my fairy tale villain.

Will I ride away safely into the night, dreaming of happily ever after?

Or, will I succumb to the poisonous apple lay among the forbidden fruit?

Once Upon A Time...

I met Gabriel Black.OUAT Divider

Excerpt
Declan's POV

I've learned to disappear. Over the last few months, I've perfected the art of avoidance. Quincy wants to apologize. Brody wants to apologize. Everybody's sorry about what happened.

Apology not accepted.

There's not a damn thing, not one word, that either of them could say to make me feel any better. The old me would have pushed the pain aside, ignoring my own feelings, to do whatever it took to make things right. Well, I'm not that guy anymore.

I can't stomach the pity on Brody's face, that misplaced concern, too little, too late. I don't want his pity. I just want to punch him in the face, but it still wouldn't be enough. Accepting his apology would allow him to breathe a little easier, and he doesn't deserve it.

And Quincy. Just thinking about her twists the knife in my gut. It's not that I don't believe her when she says she's sorry. It's just that I don't need her apology. I need her.
Liza's POV

"Hey, I need to go. You want me to walk you home?" I can tell by the expression on his face that he really means 'walk me home' when he says that. It's not code for 'wanna go get freaky?' like I'm used to.

Home? No. That is not what I want. I see Jerk-off weaving his way through the crowd, looking for me, and I grab Declan's hand, pulling him along behind me. All of a sudden, a night on that guy's couch with a few minutes of rutting no longer appeals to me.

"Let's go!" I yell over my shoulder, wishing he was asking something different but knowing it's for the best. I head straight for the stairs, the loud music and heat pressing in on me.

I push open the large metal doors, taking a deep breath as we step out into the warm night air. It's after midnight, and this isn't how my nights usually end.

Releasing his hand, I begin walking in the direction of my dorm. I walk quickly, turning the corner into an alley, not even sure he's still following me. I'm startled when he reaches for my shoulder, stopping me, and steps in front of me.

"Liza, is something wrong? I didn't mean..." He rubs his hand over his dark, cropped hair once more as he takes a step back.

"It's fine. I'm just drunk and need to get out of here." I'm defensive. Rejection settles in the pit of my stomach. It's not something I'm used to, and I hate it. I mean really, really hate it.

"Liza." His voice is low and steady but commanding. I look up, finding him just as conflicted as I am. He takes two small steps, closer to me, and I back up, until my back is against the hard concrete wall. When he's standing directly in front of me, his chest heaving and his voice breathless, he whispers, "I'm going to be naughty now."

He leans down, a hand tilting my chin up to his. For a moment, the world stands still, and then, his mouth crashes into mine, his hands find my waist and lift me up, pressing my back into the wall. It's hard, and sexy, and raw, and I can't fight it. I don't want to.

I raise my legs, wrapping them shamelessly around his waist, unable to get close enough. His hardness fits tightly against me, the friction pure torture. I'm aware that my skirt is above my hips and someone could see us at any moment, but I can't make myself care.

There's nothing but his tongue, pushing its way into my mouth, his fingers gripping my thighs, and his heart pounding against mine. Nothing but him.

Wrapping my hands around his neck, I deepen the kiss, our teeth clashing together, desperate, hungry for more. He groans, devouring my lips with his own. Abruptly, he pulls away, leaving me stunned as our chests heave between us. Staring into each other's eyes for several long moments, we struggle to catch our breaths.

He breaks the silence first. "How did I do?" His mouth is so close to mine, the words vibrate across my lips, his lips teasing mine.

"Perfect."

"Do you wanna go somewhere?" This time, I know he means something different. And this... this is what I can handle.
